In the end, Rhonda Tavey kept her word after all those weeks of talking with authorities, and returned from the Dallas area with the five children she'd been accused of abducting.
"The five missing children have been recovered, and they're in good health," said Donna Hawkins in the Harris County District Attorney's Office-moments after Tavey surrendered in Harris County.
The five kids had been staying with Tavey since evacuating in the midst of Hurricane Katrina. She has reportedly told authorities she took the kids because their mother was unfit-and she was putting them in danger. The mother has insisted those allegations are simply not true.
Tavey now faces a total of five kidnapping charges, and is potentially looking at some serious time behind bars.
"She faces a range of punishment of two to ten years in prison, and up to a ten-thousand dollar fine," Hawkins said.
All five of the children have been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services, a standard move in this type of case according to authorities.
